Feb. 1, 2012 - Today started out with a volleyball game between the teachers and the 6th grade. 6th grade won 2 out of 3 games. Good job, 6th grade!!! (We teachers gave it our all, but it wasn't enough. We all had fun!)
Congratulations to the 1st grade representatives, Patrick, Audrey and Rose, to the "Math Bee." They all did a great job and made their classmates proud of them.
First grade was very proud of Mark, Madison and Patrick for their great spelling in the Spelling Bee on Thursday.
Reminder - All students must pack a lunch for Friday because we are leaving for the Stocker Center at 11:00.
The all school Mass is Friday culminating a great "Catholic Schools Week." Hope you can join us. Four 1st graders have parts. A note will be in book bags Wed. if your child has a part to practice. Thanks. (Hope you enjoyed the thank you note your child wrote to you on Tuesday.)
Spelling list: five, mine, like, ride, time, kite, bike, dime
FYI - In order to take field trips and ride on the bus with your child's class, parents need to be fingerprinted. This is a policy set forth by the Toledo Diocese. See Mrs. Lima about the details. We would love to have you join for our field trips!

Math
We are working on telling time to the hour on the clock face and on a digital clock. Also we are working on tally marks and counting by 5's. Try to do something at home each night to reinforce these two concepts.
Reading
Our 3rd reader is about growth and changes. Please help your child find a baby picture that he/she can share with the class. Send it in an envelope by Thursday of next week. It will be returned by Friday, Feb. 3. (Enjoy looking through pictures with your child!)
Spelling list: 8 regular spelling words from now on. long a words: game, make, name, gave, place, take, bake, came
Week of Jan. 17-19
Math: The great 6th graders partnered with first grade on a math measurement project. They helped the 1st graders use a non-standard measuring tool to find 5 things around the school that fit that length. The whole class said what fun they had working with the 6th graders!!
Science & Math: Thank goodness the snow returned to Northern Ohio because 1st grade is talking about the season of winter and all its characteristics. Each person decided on a pattern like AAB or ABAB to complete a bulletin board strip with snowflakes and snowmen. These are hanging in the hallway helping to make a winter wonderland! Then we grouped a set of snowmen 10 different ways by attributes like snowmen with hats or snowmen with stick arms.
Week of January 9
Your child is invited to "show and share" a Christmas toy or gift with the class. We will do this Fri. Jan. 13; Tues., Jan. 17; Wed., Jan 18 and Thurs., Jan 19. Your child may bring something each day if he/she chooses and you agree with the toy selected. They need to know: 1. name of the item 2. what it does or how it works 3. why they like it or how they will play with it. (I'm looking forward to seeing some of the new toys on the market.) Thank you for your help on this project.
Spelling List: Short e words: ten, red, went, rest, end, jet; Dino-words: grow, inches
Book Report for January The goal this month is one (1) report as a shadow box. A shoe box works well, but any box will do. Please help your child write the title and author on the top of the shadow box along with his/her name. Encourage your child to be creative making a scene from the story read using clay, toys, paint, etc. Enjoy! The last day to turn in the report is Tues., Jan. 31, 2012.
Religion test: Please review the Nativity story with your child. Two papers came home on Friday telling the story of the birth of Jesus along with a Nativity scene to help your child retell the Christmas story.
Week of January 2, 2012
Today is the Feast of the Epiphany or manifestation of Jesus with the visit of the Three Kings. The whole school attended the School Blessing Ceremony. Then the Magi and a shepherd visited 1st grade to tell of their experiences at the time of Jesus' birth. A copy of the house blessing came home today. You may wish to do it and celebrate with your family all the good things that happen in your house.
Congratulations 1st grade!!
Teamwork works! We won the contest today for the largest amount of paper with 897 pounds. (There must be a lot of clean sheds or garages out there!) Thank you families for going the extra mile and saving papers for us!
Happy New Year! Hope you had a wonderful peaceful, faith-filled Christmas!
Spelling: The words this week highlight the short o sound. Here are the words: lot, off, job, not, got, drop ; dino-mite words: night and January.
